Finally another Japan travel diary post. I’m very happy and deeply honored that some of you are waiting and enjoying our Japan travel blog posts. This time I’m gonna share with you one of our most memorable places at Tokyo, that is Yanaka.
It took me a while to continue writing our Japan travel post simply because I take it seriously I want to portray and share our experience & love as much as I can with you. It gives me satisfaction and makes smile every time I received sweet messages from blog readers telling me that they enjoyed reading our blog and how it inspires them.
I have received countless of requests for the downloadable version of our Japan Ultimate Guide/ Tips, I’m planning to update the guide by adding more information, hopefully I can get the mood and finish it as soon as possible :)
Yanaka is a district where you can experience the old town of Tokyo. The ambiance is totally different from the modern metropolitan city of Tokyo.
Most of you might already know that Kyoto is very famous for its old town traditional ambiance, well you can get a lil bit of Kyoto atmosphere here more or less.
Yanaka is located at the Northern part of Tokyo, it is within walking distance from Ueno park. AnakJajan took the train because we were too lazy to walk, we arrived at Nippori Station. There are two main attractions for tourist, Yanaka Ginza (5-10 minutes walk from Nippori station) and Yanaka Cemetery (3 minutes walk from Nippori Station), you can see the map once you reached Nippori Station.
Sometimes getting lost when traveling can turn out to be the best part of traveling just like the experience we had at Yanaka. We were trying to get to Yanaka Ginza yet we took the wrong path to Yanaka Cemetery and unexpectedly found an amazing oldschool neighborhood that is so peaceful and beautiful, just like the scene we saw from Japanese movie or cartoon.
Yanaka Cemetery is an old cemetery from Edo period, the cemetery has a very nice landscape and the street is lined with Cherry Blossoms tree which will look amazing during blooming season.
While Yanaka Ginza is a shopping street filled with so many shops opens everyday from 15.00 – 20.00. There are so many tasty looking snack stalls and the snacks are relatively cheap here.
Yanaka Ginza was very crowded during our visit because it was on golden week, one of most popular and crowded holiday season at Japan.
At the entrance of Yanaka Ginza, you will find an old Matcha tea house from 1924 Chayutei where you can enjoy matcha drink or try their Matcha Choux. You can easily spot this shop because they are displaying a huge tower of Cream Puff in front of the shop.
AnakJajan had their Matcha Choux JPY 310. The choux dough was very special, it has a unique crunchiness and aroma from the use of brown rice and roasted tea filled with generous amount of velvety smooth matcha greentea the pastry cream that tasted heavenly!! Very smooth, creamy, rich and intense with matcha flavor. So so soo good, even Mr. Jajan a non dessert person loves it so much he decided to buy another one in the afternoon but unfortunately it was sold out so fast, sad max!
Then we bought this sushi from a sushi stall near yanaka ginza runs by an old couple, their passion and love for what they are doing clearly reflected on how this simple looking dish can taste so delicious it warms our heart out.
We ended our trip at Yanaka Ginza by having Ikayaki at this stall located near entrance gate, a Japanese-style hot-plate pizza dish made from squid and flour mixture and topped with teriyaki sauce that cost around 200 – 550 JPY. It took us around 40minutes to queue but the Ikayaki was worth the wait because it tasted soooo unique yet sooo good!! We had two menu, one with mentaiko and the other one sandwiched with rice cracker and filled with melting cheese. Must try!
Overall AnakJajan just love the nostalgic old town ambiance at Yanaka, the rustic charm is just something you must not miss. Let’s travel!
